Storage explained (block, object, backups)

Last updated on Jul 14, 2026

Gewape Cloud gives you a few kinds of storage, each suited to a different job. Picking the right one saves money and trouble.

Block Storage (volumes). A disk you attach to a server, under Storage, then Block Storage. It behaves like a hard drive: you format it, mount it, and the operating system reads and writes files on it. Use it for a database's data directory, an application's files, or any server that needs more disk than its plan includes. See Add storage (a volume).

Object Storage. Storage for files served over the web, under Storage, then Object Storage. Instead of a disk, you get Containers (buckets) that hold files, each with its own address. Use it for images, videos, documents, downloads and backups. It scales without limit and is far cheaper than a server disk for large files. See Store files in Object Storage.

Backups and Snapshots. Saved copies for safety, under Storage Backups and Storage Snapshots, plus Server Snapshots for whole servers. See Back up your data.

A simple rule of thumb: if a program on a server needs to read and write it like a disk, use a volume. If it is a file you want to keep, share, or serve to the web, use object storage. For anything you cannot afford to lose, take a backup or snapshot.
